Why Join a Church?

This is one question that is asked on a regular basis. Perhaps you have asked this question more than once yourself. It is no question that our society is a "non-committed" society. Commitment is not an idea that many people entertain for a lengthy period of time, yet, commitment is very important to God.

The purpose for joining a church family is commitment. Commitment both to Christ and to His Church. our commitment is reflected by giving of our tithes, faithful attendance and ministry involvement. Some people have the idea that being a Christian is enough that a person doesn't really need to be a member of a church. It is true that for a person to be a Christian that person must make Christ the first priority of their lives and ask Him to forgive their sins. However, God designed the Church to be the gatherings place for followers of Jesus. A God-ordained institution for Christians to pray together, worship together, help one another and most of all, grow in their knowledge and faith together.

The Church is by definition; the 'called out' ones. People who have been called out of the world's lifestyle and values to live for God and His values. This group of people, when joined together, are to shine like a lighthouse, a beacon of hope to the community. The Church is called a "body." The Apostle Paul taught that everyone in the body was important and necessary. He stressed that if one member of the body cuts himself/herself from the body that the body would then be handicapped. When any Christian decides that they don't need to be a part of the church, they handicap that particular churches potential to be a lighthouse in that community for Jesus.

Membership in the church is a public way to demonstrate your commitment to God and to others. Together, we shine the light of God's love, hope and forgiveness to those around us. Together, we can be used to bring glory and honor to Christ and extend the hand of Jesus to one another.

Let's finish with 3 final observations

1. Being a member increases your opportunity to deepen your commitment to Christ.
2. Being a member increases your opportunity to express your commitment and service to    others.
